How to Prepare for an Interview

How to Prepare for an Interview

Job interviews can be both exciting and nerve-wracking. Proper preparation is key to feeling confident and making a lasting impression on potential employers. A wise woman once told me,“by failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.”

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to put your best foot forward during the interview process.

1.        Research the studio and role

Before stepping into the interview, thoroughly research the company. Understand their mission, values, culture, and recent projects or news. Reviewthe job description carefully to identify the key responsibilities and how your experience aligns with them. This knowledge allows you to tailor your answers to highlight your relevant skills.

2.      Practice commoninte rview questions

Anticipate questions related to your experience, strengths, weaknesses, and problem- solving skills. Practice answers to questions like:

•     "Tell me about yourself."

•     "What project in your portfolio are you most proud of?"

•     "Which projects drew you to our studio? "Structure your responses with clarity and impact.

3.      Prepare questions for the interviewer

Interviews are a two-way street. Asking insightful questions shows genuine interest and engagement. Consider questionssuch as:

•     "What does short term and long term success look like in this role?"

•     "Can you tell me more about the team I would be working with?"

•     "What are the company’s goals for the next year?"

4.      Know your CV & portfolio inside and out

Be ready to discuss any experience or skills listed on your CV and any projects in your portfolio. Highlight specific accomplishments and be prepared to explain gaps in employment or career changes.

5.      Dress the part

Research the company's dress code (via the company website and Instagram) and aim to dress slightly more formal than their standard attire. Looking polished demonstrates respect and professionalism.

6.     Study the logistics

Plan your route to the interview location or ensure your video meeting setup is working correctly. Avoid public, noisy places video meetings where possible. Arriving late, dealing with technical issues, or having a messy/noisy background can create a negative first impression.

7.      Stay calm and confident

This is easier said than done. Nerves are natural, but staying calm is key. Take deep breaths beforethe interview, maintain good posture, and make eye contact.

Confidence is as much about body language as it is about your answers.

8.      Follow up post-interview

Send a thank-you email directly or through your recruitment consultant within 24 hours, expressing appreciation for the opportunity and reiterating your interest in the role. Mention any highlights from the conversation to reinforce your enthusiasm.

By following these steps, you’ll be well-prepared to present yourself as a thoughtful, confident, and qualified candidate. Good luck!
